LaBute's broadway play "Bash: Latterday Plays" was filmed and shown on Showtime in 2000. "Nurse Betty" was nominated for a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. His first big budget studio feature was "Nurse Betty" (2000), the first time he directed a screenplay written by somebody else. LaBute's next wrote and directed "Your Friends & Neighbors" (1998), also a critical success. LaBute also won the Filmmakers Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival, perhaps the most important factor in turning him into a major star of the independent film scene. "In the Company of Men" won awards for LaBute at the Deauville Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, the Society of Texas Film Critics Awards and the Thessaloniki Film Festival. The two would continue to collaborate on many of LaBute's films. "In the Company of Men" (1997) starred LaBute's college friend, Aaron Eckhart. After working for years as a playwright, LaBute burst onto the film scene with a critically acclaimed film version of that play. His play "In the Company of Men," produced at BYU in December 1992, was awarded the Associate for Mormon Letters (AML) Award for Drama in 1993. Attended film school (on a scholarship) at Brigham Young University, during which time he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
